A hard asset is a tangible or real asset with intrinsic value that is not dependent on a financial claim or contractual promise. Hard assets include physical items such as real estate, commodities, precious metals, land, and natural resources. Because they cannot be created or expanded easily through monetary policy, hard assets are often viewed as stores of value and tend to perform well during periods of inflation, currency debasement, or financial instability.
